    Determining the Effects of Technology on Children Kristina Hatch Faculty Sponser: Timothy Henry, Computer Science and Statistics Technology has become an essential part of Americans’ daily lives, affecting our communications, mail, relationships, the management of our bills and finances. As we have become more immersed in the benefits and capabilities of these constantly developing technologies, children as well as adults have become avid users. Laptops and cell phones are specially developed for preteens. Software and game companies have been targeting children in their game development. Video games have become common entertainment for children as young as four. Children today can pick up a smart phone and quickly learn how to use all of its features, as if it were inherent to them. Today’s American children have a higher exposure to technology than any previous generation. Doctors, experts, and parents alike have begun to worry about the effects of this exposure as these children get older. Some believe that technology has provided a wide variety of benefits to children, and aided with their development. For example, technology allows for the classroom to be updated and education to be modernized to keep up with the ever-changing and high paced world. However, on the opposing side, some believe that technology is stunting children’s development, and making them more prone to violence. In order to determine how technology should be integrated into children’s lives, if at all, we must analyze the different effects technology has been having on the youth of this generation. I have researched several benefits and detriments to technology in the hands of children and taken a look at how they influence children’s mental and physical development. Along with extensive research on the topic, I have also interviewed a senior research scientist at the Center for Children and Technology, Cornelia Brunner, spoken to a class of fourth grade students about their technology usage, and surveyed high school students and adults about their thoughts on technology trends and ideals in children’s lives. Through these experiences and research I have been able to see what the trends are in technology for children and how different age groups feel about the topics. Through my project I aim to educate people about not only how technology affects children, but also how it can be properly incorporated into their lives

    A Study of Some Personal Problems of North Cache High School Students

    The fact that young people have many varied and perplexing problems is recognized by leading educators. It is also recognized that the problems of these young people should be taken into consideration when formulating educational objectives and planning the curriculum for the schools. Recently the Cache County School System inaugurated a guidance service in the North Cache High School. The purpose of the service is to more adequately help the students solve their many and varied problems. In order to do a better job of helping the students, it is felt that it will be of assistance to find out what some of these problems are, the effort students have put forth to solve them, and the agencies that have been most helpful in the solution of them. There is special concern with the role the school has played in helping students with their problems. The information collected may aid in setting up the objectives for the guidance program and may possibly be a step towards general curriculum improvement. It is felt that the best method for the purpose of this study is that of securing directly from the students their own opinion regarding their problems. the purpose of this study, thus, as actually three-fold; first, to find out what students think their problems are; second, to determine how much effort the feel they have to put forth to solve these problems; third, to discover what agencies they feel have been most hepful in the soution of these problems. With this information it is felt that the guidance service and the school can serve the students more adequately

    The Division of Professional Degrees and Licences Upon Marital Breakdown: A Commentary on Caratun v. Caratun

    The question of how to deal with professional degrees upon marital breakdown is an interesting one, yet there is a relative paucity of Canadian cases on the subject. In the United States, where the issue has been considered much more frequently, there are conflicting opinions as to the proper approach. Often, degrees acquired during marriage are not explicitly dealt with on their own; they are used as factors to be considered in awarding maintenance payments or an unequal division of other marital assets. Rarely has it been argued that the value of the degrees themselves be divided as part of the matrimonial property; rarer still has such an argument met with much success. Courts have focused on the question of whether degrees can be considered property and rejected the claim on that basis. Underlying these decisions is a concern for where a division of a degree as property might lead. This paper addresses these policy concerns and examines arguments in favour of dividing degrees acquired during the marriage as matrimonial property. Given the limitations of using existing matrimonial property legislation to do this, it is suggested that this is most effectively accomplished through a remedial constructive trust. These principles will then be applied to an analysis of the Ontario Court of Appeal\u27s recent decision in Caratun v. Caratun

    dissertationTwo classes of agents have effects on the chemotactic response of human neutrophils. Chemoattractants, such as E. coli bacterial factor (BF) and the recently discovered N-formylmethionyl peptides, initiate directed cellular movement, while chemotactic modulators enhance or depress cell movement initiated by chemoattractans. We have previously shown that cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) depresses neutrophil migration toward E. coli BF, while cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cGMP) enhances the same process. In the present study, we examined the effects of chemoattractants and modulators on neutrophil levels of cGMP and cAMP. A simplified radioimmunoassay procedure was developed which employed a rapid heat inactivation of cellular samples rather than the traditional acid inactivation. Three chemoattractants and six chemotactic modulators were tested in concentrations which initiate or modulate cell movement. The chemoattractants, BF, N-formylmethionylalanine, and trypsinized human complement, stimulated the accumulation of neutrophil cGMP (40-70% average increase) but had little effect on cAMP concentrations. The enhancing chemotactic modulators, phenylephrine, prostaglandin F1-alpha, carbachol, and phorbol myristate acetate, also caused significant (p ? 0.05) increases (19-34%) in neutrophil cGMP levels without affecting cAMP concentrations. In contrast, two agents which inhibit the chemotactic response; isoproterenol and prostaglandin E1, significantly elevated cAMP concentrations in these cells. These results suggest that the ability to elevate cGMP is inherent in the action of both chemoattractants and enhancing chemotactic modulators.
